The 5th graders do an e-mentoring program through TryEngineering, where each student is paired with a professional in the STEM field. The kids and their e-mentors read articles and send letters back and forth to each other about them. Then once a month, they do a STEM activity that goes along with the articles they read.
A company that teams with TryEngineering selected classrooms across the country during Christmas time to receive STEM projects for kids to do at home over Christmas break. There was a shipping delay, and they all didn't come in until mid-late January. To our surprise, we received mbot Robots and not just one but one for each student. Since we had a robotics unit through TryEngineering coming up, We decided to build them in class together and do a little coding. The best part was that all the kids got to bring their robots home today.
